Up, Up and Away

I know it's Monday....you need something happy, something uplifting.

Maybe a hot air balloon trip with the Lennon Sisters might help?

Perhaps some music would help, such as the Lennons singing "Up Up And Away?"

Let's see the Fifth Dimension top that!

Overlooked Nuggets from Lawrence Welk's TV Treasures

It has pledge week in my viewing area for the last two weeks....and today on WBGU out of Bowling Green, we got to see the classic pledge special Lawrence Welk's TV Treasures.

But here are some TV treasures from the special that didn't make the final cut, so right here....a Welk Musical Family exclusive, more musical memories you didn't get to see.

There's the 1980 episode where Johnny Zell had problems blowing into his trumpet....looks like the fellas played a practical joke on him by stuffing his horn with chewing gum.

There's also the show from 1969 when a car used in a musical number ran out of gas.....

.....and who can forget a Silver Champagne Special when Bob Lido realized that he's not supposed to put his lunch in the microwave wrapped in tin foil?

And finally, when Tanya was scheduled to do a number with her playing the flute....but since she accidentally left the instrument at home, she had to improvise.

It's all in good, clean fun....

Keep a song in your heart and enjoy the week ahead!

Six Degrees of Gail Farrell #5

In honor of the new Land Of The Lost movie out this weekend in theaters, I thought the time is right for a new Six Degrees segment.

Today will link Gail.....

....with the Robinsons; Holly, Will and Rick from the original series!

1. Richard Kiel guest starred in two episodes of Land of the Lost as the character Malak

2. The same Kiel who also starred in two James Bond movies, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker with Roger Moore

3. Moore also was cast in the classic Hal Needham movie The Cannonball Run alongside country singer/actor Mel Tillis

4. Tillis also appeared in the sequel Cannonball Run II with Charles Nelson Reilly

5. And Reilly is best known as a panelist from Match Game....which our Gail Farrell was also a panelist!

That was fun, keep a song in your heart and watch out for sleestak

When Legends Gather: Champagne Edition

I found out about from viewing one of my favorite blogs, Retrospace which in turn was inspired by the picture blog If Charlie Parker Was a Gunslinger.

So I thought, maybe I should take a crack at this with a Welk twist....

Lawrence Welk's Fantastic Hawaiian Tour

This one is another from my fantastic archive of vintage celebrity magazines!

This is a issue of TV Radio Mirror from November 1972, and it covers the Maestro and his Musical Family's show from Hawaii....which we got to see recently in the cycle of reruns on PBS.

The back stories here are fascinating, click on the pictures to read the article!

Lawrence Welk presents Guy & Ralna

Guy & Ralna have made several albums over the years, but this one from my collection is the one that started it all....

It's easy listening for any Welk fan....a mixture of country songs and popular standards such as "Let It Be Me", "If I Were a Carpenter", "Love of the Common People" and "Edelweiss"

Here's two of the tracks for your listening pleasure....

The first one is their cover of the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love"

And this one is titled "My Happiness"

Where do you wanna be today?

Maybe Dick Dale and the Lennon Sisters have some suggestions....

There's always a weekend in the mountains,

....or maybe the Wild Wild West?

How about the islands full of sunshine, plants and wildlife?

Or perhaps a quiet evening at home will do....

Indiana

It's hard to believe that the concert at Bear Creek is already just a week ago....

To salute the fine folks from the Hoosier State (where Bear Creek Farms is located), I bring you, courtesy of Chris and YouTube, the Welk Orchestra from an episode of The Plymouth Show (a.k.a Top Tunes and New Talent) in 1959 playing a champagne version of "Indiana" featuring George Thow, Norman Bailey, Art Depew and Rocky Rockwell on trumpet!

Norma and Jimmy

Always a great pair, Norma Zimmer and Jimmy Roberts!

As solo performers, they're very popular....but since 1956, they are unstoppable as a team!

Here's our favorite duet in action....
