2. Linda was a member of the ABC team on Battle of the Network Stars X with Scott Baio as team captain

3. Scott was one of the co-ringmasters on Circus Of The Stars #7 with Peter Scolari as one of the star studded performers

4. Scolari co-starred with Bob Newhart in the CBS sitcom Newhart

5. As for ol' Bob himself, the theme song for Newhart was composed by none other than Henry Mancini

6. And Hank himself guest starred on the Lawrence Welk Show with Gail Farrell

Overall, this was a fun episode....and watching the legendary Henry Mancini work his magic was a treat for all. It was also the first time yours truly got to see the Music Makers perform the Pink Panther theme, Russ Klein was exceptional with his saxophone solo.

Also, it great hearing "Send A Little Love My Way" again for the first time since 1973's Mancini-Mercer episode. That cute little ditty was from the movie "Oklahoma Crude".

 

For the remainder of 2009 calendar year, we're scheduled to get Welk repeats which works out great because during December is when stations go into pledge mode so there won't be any new episodes that would be pre-empted.

So until then, keep a song in your heart and if you're sitting under the sweetheart tree, watch out for bird droppings.

 

Movie Songwriters

Mancini and Mercer.....they're cops!

Sounds like a popular police show....but it's not, Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer are two very popular and talented musicians and songwriters in American music.

And on this episode of the Lawrence Welk Show from November 10, 1973...the Maestro and his music makers pay a salute to their work, so here are some highlights.

Here's Henry himself being welcomed by Lawrence on the show....

Next is Ralna English and Guy Hovis singing "All His Children".....

Over to the studio is the Curt Ramsey 7 with Sandi Griffiths on lead vocals singing "Dream".....

....now here's the girls singing "Send A Little Love My Way" from the movie "Oklahoma Crude"....

....and finally here's the gang with Henry at the piano with the number "Sweetheart Tree."

Mancini-Mercer

This week's show, the music makers salute to fine songwriters, Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. Here's Cissy & Bobby getting things started with the Mercer classic "Goody Goody."

The maestro had Henry Mancini himself as his special guest, and the man behind the music of Pink Panther played two of his hits on the piano, "Days Of Wine And Roses" and "The Sweetheart Tree". We also had Arthur Duncan dancing to "Jeepers Creepers" and Guy & Ralna a great rendition of "All His Children".

There were several great numbers in the show, Gail Farrell and Larry Hooper teamed up at the piano with their rendition of "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" in which both looked and sounded cute. Myron Floren played "Charade" on his accordian, and the orchestra had several great instrumentals such as the popular standby, "That Old Black Magic" along with "Laura's Theme."

The girls chorus sang "Send A Little Love My Way" which came from the motion picture Oklahoma Crude, here's our dancers Cissy & Bobby, Jack & Mary Lou adding some dance steps to some nice harmonies followed by Clay Hart with "Hey Porter" and "Moon River" by Joe Feeney.

We also had Anacani and Tanya team up for "Accentuate The Postive" and the whole gang teaming up for the finale with "In The Cool, Cool, Cool Of The Evening"....putting the cork on yet another vintage show filled with music and melodies that is sweet sounds to anyone's ear.

Mary Lou had Bobby Burgess on as her guest to be interviewed, and he talked about how he not just danced but can play the accordian. He also mentioned his days on the Mickey Mouse Club television program which was an ideal breeding ground for what's to come next, The Lawrence Welk Show; plus his family where he and wife Kristi enjoy going out to dance, and he and kids are teaching Southern California how to dance.
