We all know that amongst the staple of contemporary pop songs covered on the Lawrence Welk Show, By The Time I Get To Phoenix (written by Jimmy Webb and made famous sung by Glen Campbell) has been one of the more popular songs featured, covered by a good number of the Music Makers.
Tanya Falan is one of them...
Here she is from 1971's Salute To The U.S.A (the very first syndicated Welk episode) giving that song her treatment.
Galveston was one of the first Lawrence Welk albums I bought and to this day, it's still one of my favorites
It's got that big brassy sound provided by the Champagne Music Makers, especially from the horn section plus some great guitar and keyboard work as well.
Several of the songs covered are just a few of the many hit songs that Glen Campbell made famous.
Here are a few cuts from the album for your listening pleasure....
Galveston....the title track (Glen Campbell)
Honey....first made famous by Bobby Goldsboro
And finally....Gentle On My Mind (Rhinestone Cowboy Glen again)
Here's another vintage video treat for all you Ralna English fans. If you liked her when she sings, "How Great Thou Art", "Tangerine" or even "The Tennessee Bird Walk"....you'll like her even more when she takes on this classic Glen Campbell hit from 1969, and it's one of the blogmeister's personal favorites as well!
And dig the mood lighting behind the orchestra, totally sixties!
The blogmeister is also the webmaster behind the very successful Welk Musical Family.com. I have been a fan of Lawrence Welk since I was a youngster (not too long ago!) and have watched (and taped) his show every Saturday night on my local PBS station, WGTE and sometimes WBGU. My hometown and current residence is Toledo, Ohio and in recent years, I have attended many of their live concerts and had the chance to meet many of the wunnerful music makers as well.
