This is the last episode of the 2009-10 Welk PBS season, and it's also the last "new" episode for a year....so starting next week, it's all repeats.
When this episode was first aired on ABC, Lynn Anderson was beginning her ascent to Country Superstar as Lawrence mentioned that she was the recipient of the Academy of Country & Western Music's Top Female Vocalist of 1967 with hits such as "Ride, Ride, Ride" and "Promises, Promises".
Tonight's show was also bittersweet and heartfelt with Natalie Nevins' recent passing, I must admit that her rendition of The Tennessee Waltz left yours truly misty-eyed and with a heavy heart.
But on a happier note, it was neat to see the girls surprise the Maestro with a birthday cake and the singing of the Happy Birthday song. These impromptu and unscripted moments make the show worth watching.
And there will be more milestones and memories to follow in the seasons to come.
So as we get ready for a new season of Welk....full of repeats....keep a song in your heart and if you don't explain to your kids about square dancing, who will?

Love Can Be a Pain In The Heart
Tomorrow is the Aldridge Sisters and Otwell Twins concert at Bear Creek Farms in which I will be attending.
Nothing like spending a day out in the country!
The girls sang one of their songs on the show, titled "Love Can Be a Pain In The Heart".
It's a really great country song, She and Sher did a great job singing it....but sadly was never released nationwide as a single, I felt it would have easily been a Top 40 hit.
Have a listen, I think you'll like it.

And speaking of country, another Welk Milestone and Memory was made in 1983 when the Aldridge Sisters; Sherry and Sheila, appeared on the popular variety show Hee Haw.

Molly Bee 1939-2009
You may have heard of her from such as work as "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and as a frequent guest on Tennessee Ernie Ford's television show.
We, the Lawrence Welk fans, knew that Molly appeared on the Maestro's show on September 12, 1959....the opening show of the 1959-60 season, as a guest Champagne Lady.
She passed away last Saturday at her home in Oceanside, CA from stroke complications, here's a link to her obit from the Tennessean newspaper.

Coming in first with 68% of the vote (53 votes in all) is Ava Barber!
And right behind in second with 31% (24 votes) is Lynn Anderson!

My album collection: Lennons go country
Have you ever imagined the Lennon Sisters singing country songs on shows such as Hee Haw, The Wilburn Brothers or the Porter Wagoner show?
From my knowledge, that never actually happened....nor there's any proof that Dee Dee, Peggy, Kathy and Janet sang at the Grand Ol' Opry, but on this album "The Lennon Sisters Pop Country"....it's the closest they got.
And it's a very good album...The sisters sound great as always!
It's a mix of their trademark harmonies, along with impeccable solo vocals by Kathy as they cover country pop songs such as Dottie West's "Here Comes My Baby Back Again", Lynn Anderson's "Promises, Promises" and Bill Anderson's "Still."
And it's produced by the talents of one Snuff Garrett and released by Mercury Records in 1968....it's worth listening.

Salute to Nashville
Before I begin, I just heard this morning that entertainer-musician-game show genius Merv Griffin had died from prostate cancer. He gave us great game shows such as Wheel Of Fortune and Jeopardy! plus was a nifty talk show host and on many occasions had interviewed Lawrence Welk and the Lennon Sisters as well. I also knew that he and Ralna English were friends as well, as both worked for the charity Childhelp USA.
He will be missed by all, including this blogmaster.
Now on with this week's show, it's a 1977 Salute to Nashville which aired on WBGU, while WGTE aired "Precious Memories" for the 900 billionth time.

Salute To Nashville 1977
This week's episode is a repeat one...Salute to Nashville from the year this webmaster was born, 1977...oops I think I just gave my age away.
Anyway, here's three wunnerful ladies here to introduce the Maestro and to get tonight's show started.
Anyway, here's three wunnerful ladies here to introduce the Maestro and to get tonight's show started.
However, my local PBS station WGTE was still in pledge mode so I had to watch the show on the Bowling Green affliate WBGU.
It all started with gang transforming the Hollywood Palace, where the show and the 1976-77 season was taped, into a country farm singing "Take Me Home Country Roads", made famous by John Denver and made into West Virginia's "unofficial" state song. There were also terrific instrumentals by the band with "Gentle On My Mind" and "Wabash Cannonball". Tom Netherton had a terrific solo number with "Make The World Go Away" and Anacani, with help from the boys in the band, did a nice rendition of "Release Me".
And here's our country gal Ava Barber, who also hosted the show's wraparounds, singing one of her smash hits "Waiting At The End Of Your Run", notice that guitarists Richard Maloof and Neil Levang are looking really fly....country style!
Gail, Sandi & Mary Lou....the same ladies who opened the show above, did a really attractive number made famous by Roy Acuff titled "Oh Lonesome Me" and there's the Semonski Sisters, minus older sister Diane, singing "Sugartime". There was also one of my favorite numbers of the show, "Bonaparte's Retreat" sung by Tanya with Arthur Duncan dancing in the middle of the song....that was nice indeed!
Ken Delo was "Walkin' The Floor" over everyone, Dick Dale sang a little "Oh Shenandoah" and what country show wouldn't be complete without a square dance....only this time, it had a disco beat!
Now that's totally 70s! Let's see Donny & Marie top that!
It was a fun show, originally aired on April 30, 1977. The show served as Tanya Falan's swan song....she left after nine glorious years on the show plus it would be the last Welk show taped at the ABC facilites for two years....they would tape at CBS Television City from 1977 to 1979.
