Spring is here!

The sounds of birds chirping....

....flowers start to bloom

.....the occasional rain shower

....but that eventually leads to sunshine and the year's first gorgeous weather!

And today begins the NCAA college basketball tournament....

Just to keep score, five of the Musical Family's alma maters are in the big dance.

Cissy King's University of New Mexico plays Montana in the East Regional

...and BYU, where Sandi Griffiths went to school, as I write, are playing Florida over in the West Region.

You have Mary Lou Metzger's Temple University playing Cornell tomorrow

Plus there's the University of Tennessee, where Jim Turner's old school is playing San Diego State

....and finally Sam Houston State where Elaine Balden will be cheering for her Bearkats to beat Baylor

So let your smile be your umbrella and start dancing!

Cover Me

From all the years watching the Welk show, the Music Makers have done thousands of tunes done in champagne style.

They also did covers of very popular pop and rock songs! Here's a few for example....

Joy To The World (Three Dog Night) by Gail and the fellas

Rock Around The Clock (Bill Haley and the Comets) by the band and singers

Land of a Thousand Dances (Wilson Pickett) danced by Bobby and Elaine

I Say a Little Prayer (Dionne Warwick) by Tanya Falan

and the grand-daddy of them all.....

One Toke Over The Line (Brewer & Shipley) by Gail and Dale

Big City USA

This week's show is titled "Big City USA", which first aired January 9, 1982. My local PBS did air it (pledge drive) but maybe yours did.

Here are some highlights....

Anacani sings "Spanish Harlem".....

Elaine and Bobby dance to "City Lights"

Kathie Sullivan sings about "Kansas City".....

....and the gang dances to "Chicago"

You gotta love the ladies of Welk dressed as flapper girls of the 1920s....

That's all this week, stay cool and stay dry!

Elaine Balden

Today is Elaine Balden's birthday today....time to celebrate!

She is known as Bobby Burgess' third...and current dancing partner, having done so since 1979. The native Texan, now a mother of two with husband Jim Balden, continues to show the world a thing or two about dancing.

Happy Birthday Elaine!

Elaine Balden

Today we celebrate the birthday of another popular music maker, Elaine Balden, who is Bobby Burgess' dancing partner number three, celebrates her special day today.

This Texas native attended Sam Houston State, and once appeared as a dancer on one of the annual Jerry Lewis Telethons as one of her highlights prior to joining Lawrence Welk in 1979. Today, happily married to Jim Balden, she's the mother of two daughters and teaches her craft to a new generation of dancers.

Happy Birthday Elaine.....let us do the Tango in your honor!

Salute To The Big Bands 1980

Yesterday, I got to see "Salute To The Big Bands" from 1980 and here's my two cents worth....a pretty fine and well-done show.

The maestro kicked things off with "Chattanooga Choo Choo" featuring the band and the singers as shown in the picture above....plus there were fine musical performances by the music makers such as Johnny Zell, Skeets Herfurt and not one but TWO clarinet solos by Henry Cuesta, and like I always said....the boys in the band (other than Lawrence) were the real stars of the show, they give the Champagne Music that extra pop.

There were also some good numbers by Guy & Ralna with "Green Eyes", Ava Barber teaming up with Myron Floren for the polka induced "Just Because", and the Aldridge Sisters and Otwell Twins with the Frank Sinatra standard, "I'll Never Smile Again".

And then there's Mary Lou's interview with Elaine Balden...also known as Bobby Burgess' dance partner number three, that makes it three dancing partners in the last four weeks (Barbara Boylan - Southtown USA and Cissy King - Irving Berlin tribute)....and like the other interviews...this one was lively, pleasant and fun. Elaine talked mostly about how she teamed up with Bobby plus her family life...married to Welk show cameraman Jim Balden and her two daughters Alana and Skyla.

Next week is a repeat....1968's Salute To The Armed Forces, but it is also one of my favorite 1960s episodes!
