I'm no longer AWOL, so lets celebrate with Gail Farrell photos

Yeah, I know.....it's been a long time since I last posted here.

After six years of blogging Welk stuff, I knew the time came when I run dry of stuff to post without repeating myself.

Trust me, if you're in my shoes.....you would know.

And what better way to celebrate from being in exile by posting plenty of pictures of the lovely Gail Farrell, since it was her birthday today.

Happy Birthday Gail!

Lawrence Welk's 50th Anniversary Album

This nice collecters item, which can be found on ebay, was first published in 1974 to celebrate Lawrence Welk's 50 years in show business.

Who would have thought that back in 1924, a North Dakota farmboy whose parents were German immigrants, had little formal education and spoke little English would one day become one of America's most popular and successful musical personalites?

You can follow his whole story in pictures here, just click below and find out why the American Dream is possible!

Welk Musical Family tumbles into the Tumblr phenomenon

The times are a changin'....

and Welk Musical Family is taking part in them as well.

Since this blog was first launched five years ago, I knew that finding fresh Welk related material would be hard once I approached 500, 1,000 & 1,500 posts.

Now that I'm approaching 1,700, it's time for me to cut back.

I'm still going to post here, I'm just going to reduce the number of throw away posts and put up more fresh, entertaining and fun material here.

And I will still post editorials here as well, I'm not giving up my right to rant.

But I do want to post Welk related pictures, without the hassle of course so I decided to launch Welk Musical Family's new official Tumblr page!

This will be updated with pictures as the days and months go by, some new, some old favorites but I know it's going to be fun for you to view as it is going to be fun for me posting.

And the best part of it all, you will be able to submit Welk pictures of your own as well.

So be a part of the Tumblr phenomenon, and tumble on down!

Musical Family Kids - Julie Hovis

On today's edition of Musical Family Kids, we will put the spotlight on Guy & Ralna's daughter Julie Hovis.

Viewers were first introduced to Julie back on the Welk show's New Years Eve program in 1977 by proud parents Guy Hovis and Ralna English.

Here's a few of the pictures shown by our Happily Married Singing Couple on that program....

Later, she would appear on camera with her parents on many of the annual Christmas shows.

Today, Julie is all grown up, a proud graduate of Arizona State University, where she teaches elementary school in the Phoenix school system.

Recently, Julie became a newlywed as she got married. Along with that, her career, education and many other accomplishments, her parents are without a doubt very proud of her.

You can see her wedding pictures online, over on Ralna's webpage it's broken down in five parts.

Also, there's some great pictures of the happy event on Welknotes!

Branson in pictures....the Tuesday edition

Now that I'm back home, I can share some of my super pictures from my trip to Branson!

Today, here's a snapshot of what went on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Of course, I spent the day driving......

going thru cities like Indianapolis.....

.....and St. Louis

not to mention rural America like the hills of Central Missouri.....

I finally arrived in Branson around five o' clock Central Time, where I arrived at the Welk Resort....

....and in the main lobby, you'll never know who you'll run into

....such as famous Welk Stars like the lovely Anacani!

And even though it was rainy, I just had to take a dip in the resort's hot tub. What a way to relax after driving 750 miles!

That picture is the pool, taken from where I was sitting in the tub, notice the steam in the night.

I'll be back tommorrow with pictures from Wednesday.

Of course, I went there for a show two years ago....that's how I met him.

That's Louis to your right, smiling for the cameras with Ralna English, who was in the show with Guy Hovis, Anacani, Mary Lou Metzger and Ken Delo.

More Random Blather from the Blogmaster....and pictures of Cleveland!

Nothing beats a nice summer's day in Ohio,

I went with my family to Cleveland last Sunday to watch an Indians baseball game, a perfect chamber of commerce day as it can get.

Here are a few pictures I like to share,

Approaching Dead Man's Curve on I-90 on the way towards downtown,

Here at the stadium, a nice statue of pitching icon Bob Feller....

Some great views from my seat in the bleachers, watching the Tribe beat the Royals

Action over at home plate....wonder what they are talking about?

And a nice shot of the Terminal Tower, with Quicken Loans Arena to the right...

And of course, Cleveland loves it's polka...it's the hometown of Frankie Yankovic!

Also today, got my car's oil changed at the Midas...but was told my serpentine belt needs to be replaced, I'll just get a second opinion....doubt that it needs to be replaced.

On a Welk note, here's Myron Floren and his grandkids with Bobby Burgess doing the Chicken Dance!

Adventures in Detroit, Fun City USA

On Tuesday, this week....I made one of my fun trips to Car City Records for some wheelin' and dealin of fine vinyl LPs when would you believe traffic on northbound I-75 came to a standstill due to a major accident!

I was stuck here for a solid half an hour, in a construction zone.....on a hot 95 degree day!

Thankfully, I had my digital camera with me....so I snapped a few pictures, here's one with all that black smoke in the distance.

Here's a shot of all the cars at a standstill, my car is the white one to your left.

And all this commotion took place Downriver in Woodhaven, so here's a nice shot of the Ford Stamping Plant.

Finally, after getting a quick lunch from A&W, I was back on my way!

I did find some good records there, including many great Lawrence Welk albums and plenty of Guy & Ralna LPs, plus I traded in some extras for some cool cash.

And on my way back home....I decided to hop onto Michigan and Trumbull to see an old friend,

I do believe the wrecking ball will come soon, but it won't wreck any fine memories of watching Tigers baseball at the corner!

I'll betcha a dollar or two that when Ken Delo was a kid growing up in the "D", he saw a good share of Tigers baseball here.

Now, I'm on my way back home....it's never a dull moment when I go up to the Motor City.

Paczki and Records

Happy Paczki Day everyone.....or Happy Fat Tuesday to be exact.

Earlier today, I went up to Detroit for some vinyl record shopping at Car City Records in St. Clair Shores...they got a really nice collection of 45s and 78s of all genres. Here's me in my car, making the trip north up I-75 and as you can tell, the weather is starting to improve from last week....

And inside Car City Records....a sampling of what they have in stock.

I purchased four neat albums; Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water", The Watergate Comedy Hour, Jim Nabors' "Everything Is Beautiful" and of course.....Lawrence Welk's 34 Sparkling Melodies, another classic Ranwood Records release.

After an hour and a half of vinyl huntin'....it's off to nearby Hamtramck to get some tasty paczkis, I found this nice Polish bakery, The New Polka Bakery on Conant Avenue where I got a half dozen of tasty Bavarian Chocolates.

And boy are they delicious! Notice I had one already....and like me, you don't have to be Polish to celebrate Paczki Day.

Admit it....looking at these treats are making you hungry, I wonder what kind of paczkis the Music Makers like the best?

Also, today is Mardi Gras....hope the folks down in New Orleans are having fun!
