I just heard today from my friends Mark and Judy that the talented pianist and arranger from the Welk Orchestra Bob Smale passed away yesterday.
We at Welk Musical Family.com send our condolences to the Smale family and the Champagne Music Makers.
In his memory, we bring you Bob playing his version of Chopsticks from the 1972 episode "Childhood Memories"

RIP, my memmories of Robert are mainly from young childhood, (he and my mother were adolessent friends, I think he was at my parents wedding.) He always had a candy in his pocket for a child, and when i would smile, i think his smile became bigger than mine. showing his glorious heart that still can be SENSED today in the recordings of his music. MAY YOU BE BLESSED WITH THE REWARDS YOU HAVE EARNED!
When I was playing in the 82nd Airborne Division band and we had a new man delivered to our outfit, we all soon found out that this was one of the most talented people to enter into our gates, and it was Bob Smale. Soon our singing trio was having fantastic arrangements written for us, and Bill, Glen, Don and I will always be beholden to Robert Smale for all his ideas which he shared with us as we did our military time together. Requiem aeternam, Bob. Thomas J. (TJ)Cole
